Understanding the Purpose of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to restore teeth that, while damaged, can function properly as long as their external surfaces are replaced. Made of tooth-colored porcelain or composite materials, dental crowns cover and protect cracked, chipped, broken, and badly discolored teeth. Dental crowns restore the shape, size, color, and functionality of teeth. The straightforward, durable and attractive solution serves as a noninvasive placement process for crowns and bridges. The process can be completed in a short time, making these options a convenient choice for many patients at Harbor Point Dental Group.

Dental crowns can also be used to repair a tooth after root canal therapy or to anchor dental bridges.  Dental crowns and bridges are durable and attractive solutions for missing or badly damaged teeth.

Placing Dental Crowns – Restorative Care

Harbor Point Dental Group Dentist Dr. Frank Cimato typically places dental crowns in two visits.  During the first visit, he determines the size and shape of the crown, often using a mold and pictures of the mouth, and sends this information to the dental laboratory that will craft the crown.  When the crown is ready, usually in one to two weeks, the patient returns for the second visit to have the crown placed.  The dental crown is then carefully placed, bonded to the tooth or implant. Once in place, dental crowns look and feel natural and can last for years with proper care.
